Hireco adds Sunswap TRUs to lease fleet

March 20, 2025
One of Great Britain’s largest commercial vehicle lease providers will now offer Sunswap’s zero-emission transport refrigeration units, helping fleets cut costs and emissions.

Hireco, one of Great Britain’s largest commercial vehicle lease providers, plans to add five Sunswap Endurance transport refrigeration units (TRUs) to its fleet.

The deal marks the growing adoption of sustainable refrigeration technology among leading U.K. fleet operators. Hireco manages over 8,000 assets and works with more than 70 of the U.K.’s top 100 transport companies. The agreement will enable Hireco to offer its customers a zero-emission alternative to diesel-powered transport refrigeration, Sunswap reported.

“This investment in Sunswap’s technology aligns with our commitment to sustainable transport solutions,” James Smith, Hireco group CEO, said in a news release. “We’re focused on helping our customers reduce their environmental impact while maintaining operational excellence.

“Sunswap’s proven zero-emission refrigeration technology offers our customers a practical path to cleaner, more efficient cold chain operations.”

Hireco’s customers can expect significant operational savings when switching to Endurance units, with running costs up to 81% lower than traditional diesel systems, Sunswap added. Each unit eliminates the use of diesel and saves approximately 120 metric tons of CO2 over a 10-year period.

Endurance delivers the same performance as diesel units, enabling Hireco to offer customers a path to sustainable refrigeration without requiring a change to a customer’s operations.

The agreement with Hireco comes during a period of significant growth for Sunswap. Following a £17.3 million ($22.4 million) investment led by BGF and growing customer demand, the company recently expanded its manufacturing facility in Leatherhead, Surrey.

“Hireco’s decision to adopt Endurance units demonstrates growing confidence in electric transport refrigeration among industry leaders,” said Alaistar Gough, Sunswap head of business development. “Their deep understanding of fleet operations and expertise in guiding customers to the right solutions makes them an ideal partner as we continue expanding the availability of zero-emission refrigeration technology across the U.K. market.”
